Iron Infusions

Restore Energy & Combat Fatigue

Iron Infusions

Iron plays a critical role in oxygen delivery, energy production, cognitive function, immune health, and hormone balance. When iron levels are low, even simple daily tasks can feel exhausting.

At VP Health, we offer medically supervised iron infusion therapy for patients who are unable to tolerate oral iron, do not absorb it effectively, or require faster correction of iron deficiency. Our team focuses on identifying the root cause of low iron while safely restoring iron stores to help you feel stronger, clearer, and more energized.

Signs & Symptoms of Low Iron

Low iron or iron deficiency anemia can present with a wide range of symptoms, including:

  • Persistent fatigue or weakness
  • Shortness of breath or poor exercise tolerance
  • Brain fog, poor concentration, or memory issues
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Headaches
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Hair thinning or hair loss
  • Brittle nails
  • Palpitations
  • Pale skin
  • Restless legs
  • Low mood or irritability
  • Worsening anxiety or depression
  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual cycles

Many patients are told their labs are "normal" yet still feel unwell. At VP Health, we look at optimal iron ranges, not just whether values fall within a lab reference range.

When Is an Iron Infusion Recommended?

Iron infusions may be recommended when:

  • Oral iron causes significant side effects (nausea, constipation, abdominal pain)
  • Iron supplements are not improving lab values
  • There is poor absorption due to gut conditions
  • Iron deficiency is contributing to chronic fatigue or reduced quality of life
  • Iron levels need to be corrected more efficiently
  • Ongoing blood loss (e.g., heavy menstrual bleeding) continues to deplete iron stores

Risks & Safety Considerations

Iron infusions are generally well tolerated when properly indicated and administered under medical supervision. As with any medical treatment, potential risks may include:

  • Temporary headache or muscle aches
  • Mild nausea
  • Dizziness or flushing
  • Injection site irritation
  • Rare allergic or hypersensitivity reactions

Your provider will review your medical history, lab work, and risk factors to ensure iron infusions are appropriate and safe for you. You will be monitored during and after your infusion.

What to Expect During Your Infusion

  • Infusions are administered in-clinic by trained medical staff
  • Treatment time varies depending on the formulation used
  • Most patients are able to resume normal activities afterward
  • Some patients notice improvement within days to weeks, while others experience gradual improvement over time
  • Follow-up lab work may be recommended to assess response and guide further care

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Lab work must be completed within the last 90 days prior to treatment. Lab work can be ordered through an AHS provider, or run privately through VP Health (cost is $150, eligible through naturopathic benefits).

Patients must meet one or more of the following criteria:
  • Ferritin ≤ 60 mcg/L
  • TSAT ≤ 20%
  • Hemoglobin ≤ 110 g/L

Your provider will interpret these results in the context of your symptoms and medical history.

Your infusion will be done by VP Health's Registered Nurse under the orders of a Nurse Practitioner.

VP Health uses Iron Sucrose for most of our treatments to reduce the risk of anaphylaxis and other negative side effects. If you are interested in Monoferric iron, please contact us.

Yes! Pregnancy drastically reduces a woman's iron stores in order to nourish baby. Iron Infusions are a great way to replenish your iron leading to an increase in energy and improved nutrient status.

This depends on your starting iron levels, the cause of your deficiency, ongoing iron losses and your body's response to treatment. Typically, VP Health will encourage patients to receive an infusion once a week for 2-3 weeks to adequately raise iron stores.

Iron infusions correct iron levels more efficiently but do not always replace the need to address underlying causes, such as heavy menstrual bleeding, gut inflammation, or dietary insufficiencies. If you believe there is an underlying cause you'd like to explore, book a consult with Dr. Pilling, ND to address the underlying issue.

No, unfortunately iron infusions are not covered. There are exceptions to this (for example if you have a Health Spending Account). Please check with your insurance providers to get more information.
